Carabao Cup holders Manchester City will be aiming for a place in the quarter-finals in midweek as they head to Premier League rivals West Ham. City are the joint most successful team in the history of the competition, level with Liverpool, with Pep Guardiola winning four consecutive finals.

Past Meetings

City picked up four points from their two Premier League clashes with the Hammers last season and Guardiola’s side have won nine of their last 10 league games against them. Team News

West Ham boss David Moyes will shuffle his starting options for this tie, with Mark Noble and Craig Dawson set to come into the side. However, Czech pair Tomáš Souček and Alex Král will miss out, alongside long-term absentee Ryan Fredericks.

Guardiola will rotate his options at the London Stadium, with Zack Steffen, Conrad Egan-Riley, Luke Mbete, Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Cole Palmer all in line to start.

West Ham vs. Manchester City Preview and Predictions

West Ham have looked well equipped to balance the demands of European football with the Premier League and domestic cup competitions so far in 2021-22. The Hammers head into this clash with just two defeats in all competitions this season and they edged out Manchester United at Old Trafford in the previous round of the Carabao Cup to set up this tie.

City have lost just once in domestic action this season, on the opening day at Tottenham, and Guardiola’s defending Premier League champions look to be clicking back into gear. Guardiola’s side returned from the international break with successive wins over Burnley and Club Bruges, as they look to haul in their rivals both in England and Europe.

Despite both sides being expected to make wholesale changes, City’s pedigree in this competition under Guardiola puts them in a strong position, and an away win comes in at a price of 1.54. Riyad Mahrez is City’s top goalscorer across all competitions and the Algerian star netted twice in the 6-1 win over Wycombe in the previous round.

Manchester City to win 2-1 at 9.00

City have consistently taken this competition very seriously during Guardiola’s time in English football and they will be determined to make a statement in their defence of the competition, with the added bonus of possibly overtaking Liverpool as the most successful club in League Cup history.

Both teams to score at 1.76

Despite City looking very solid defensively this season, with three goals conceded in eight Premier League games, Guardiola is expected to field a much-changed back line in London against a West Ham side who have scored in 10 of their 11 games this term.
