Estadio de la Ceramica La Liga

Villarreal are going through a tough period in La Liga, but they will not get any mercy from an Atletico Madrid side looking to hit back after a setback last round. The away side slipped up against Barcelona last weekend and need to respond immediately, but Villarreal are looking for points as well.

Past Meetings

Villarreal have got an honest record against the Rojiblancos from the Spanish capital, and haven’t lost in four home games against Atleti. Diego Simeone’s men were unfortunate to lose against Barcelona last weekend and that result have put them in a difficult situation. The last time Atletico Madrid beat Villarreal on the road, was a 1-0 win in April 2015, in the middle of a run of four games ending with 1-0. Two of the 13 last games have ended with a three goals or more, the other have all been low scoring as Villarreal are leading Atletico Madrid 15-9-12 in a head-to-head of their last 36 meetings, stretching back to 1998, when Villarreal beat Atletico 2-1 in November.

Team News

Alberto Moreno is out with a muscle injury and has missed the five last matches for the Yellow Submarine. But, the left-back should be the only one out for the home side, who has nothing to put the blame on during the poor spell.

Diego Simeone will have Angel Correa back after the winger was suspended against Barcelona, but still needs to cope without Jose Gimenez and Stefan Savic when Atletico travel to the Ceramica. Sime Vrsaljko has also been out with a knee injury, but are closing in on a return for Rojiblancos. The away side are still without Diego Costa, who’s out with a herniated disc in his neck. Centre-back Felipe needs to be careful against Villarreal, to not give Simeone further headache in defence, as he is on four yellow cards in 10 appearances.

Villarreal vs. Atletico Madrid Preview and Predictions

Atletico Madrid are going through a rough patch and are in need of a good experience after slipping to the sixth place in La Liga. The 1-0 loss to Barcelona was a big setback in the title fight and now they are six points behind the two giants – Barca and Real Madrid – in the League. Sevilla are also up there, one point behind the leaders and five points above Atleti, who need to turn the tide with a win against the Yellow Submarine.

Atleti may be backed at 2.45 to win at the Ceramica and the home side are going through a very difficult spell on theri own. Villarreal have slippet to 13th in the League and are without a win since they beat Deportivo Alaves 4-1 in October. After a good start to the season, Villarreal have now lost four times in their last five matches. The one point secured since October came in a 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao.

Only a few good results may help them back in contention on the top half in La Liga, but it doesn’t get much easier this Friday. Even if Atletico Madrid are also looking forward to a match in the Champions League against Lokomotiv Moscow, the home side might need to pull something out of the hat against a cheap Atletico side. That said, it’s six away games since Atletico won and Villarreal may be backed at 3.20 to win the game and 3.20 to hold the giants to a draw on Friday night.

Alvaro Morata has a lot of pressure on his shoulders this season and his five goals in 12 games aren’t especially impressive, in a run where Atletico are struggling for goals. The new superstar Joao Felix started the season very well, but have found life a bit tougher at times as the opponents familiarised themselves with his technical abilities.

Santi Cazorla has been linked away from Villarreal lately and due to his great form, the home side would love to keep the playmaker on the side. He has been hailed for his impact also this season and now he needs to help the home side hit back after a poor spell.

Recommended Bets

Total Goals Under 2.5 at 1.60

None of the sides will go head first at securing the points and Atletico might nick a narrow win, but they are also struggling to perform away from home this season. None of the two are looking full of goals and it will actually be surprising if there are more than two goals during this game.

Atletico Madrid to win to nil at 3.50

Atletico Madrid will be focused on keeping out Villarreal and hit them on the break when they get the opportunity. It will be a hard fought match and Atletico Madrid might nick it, as stated above, but they migth also get another goal if Villarreal are trying to grab an equaliser.
