Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Premier League
Tottenham need to prolong their unbeaten run to keep up with the top four, but this weekend giants Manchester City come to London. The legendary rivalry between Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola continues as Spurs are trying to catch up with two of the former’s previous employers – Manchester United and Chelsea.
Spurs sent Man City out of the Champions League last season with an aggregate win on away goals, as they beat the Citizens 1-0 at home in the tournament. That’s Spurs only win in nine meetings, as they will have to go back to October 2, 2016 to find the next, then on a three run of three consecutive victories against City.
Since that game, Man City have scored 20 times in nine games and have a record of 6-2-2 in their 10 last games against the Lilywhites. Last season’s match was played at Wembley, when City ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a Riyad Mahrez goal in the sixth minute. The reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium this term ended in a 2-2 draw. Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero scored the City goals, as Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura sealed a point for the away side.
Pep Guardiola should have his whole squad available for the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as Leroy Sané is the only one still out injured and has been since the Community Shield in August last year. Fernandinho and Raheem Sterling are both on four yellow and are in danger of missing out on the next game against West Ham if they pick up another booking on Sunday.
Jose Mourinho has been looking for a new striker in the absence of Harry Kane and signed a new deal with Giovani Lo Celso when Christian Eriksen moved to Inter this week. Spurs are also without Moussa Sissoko but should have the rest available for the match against City.
Tottenham vs. Manchester City Preview and Predictions
Spurs are unbeaten in four, but have a poor record against the reigning champions and will need a great performance to stop Manchester City from winning their fourth in a row head-to-head with the Lilywhites. Mourinho’s side may be backed at 5.85 to win the game and 4.55 to hold City for a draw in London on Sunday.
The home side have been struggling this term and the poor results cost Mauricio Pochettino his job. After a good start to life under the Portuguese tactician, the Yids went through a rough patch between December and January but have recently sparked back to life with four games unbeaten and their latest setback came in the FA Cup.
Southampton forced Tottenham to a rematch next week, but first they must cope with a League game against a City side unbeaten in five games. They have lost four times away this term but should be confident of getting a win over Spurs this weekend and may be backed at 1.52 to win.
Aguero is back in the side and back among the goals after a spell out in December and might be decisive again, as he has contributed 16 goals in 18 Premier League games so far this campaign.
Gabriel Jesus has to fill in for the Argentine but hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations. He is still on nine goals in 20 league games and is a great substitute for the away side.
The home side have arguably managed to cope without Kane lately, but the absence of the captain might be vital in the big games against teams like City.
Man City to score Over 2.5 goals at 2.40
Manchester City have a great record against Spurs and have scored three or more in three out of their last seven meetings. The away side might face a different Tottenham under Mourinho, but should be favourites to win the match and are confident of getting the better of their rivals.
Man City to win and both teams to score at 2.50
Spurs are required to score at home against City and as it ended in a 2-2 draw at the Etihad last time, they might feel confident of doing so. Six of their last 10 meetings have ended with both teams to score and City are struggling to keep a clean sheet this term, but they might claim a narrow win in a high scoring game.
