Southampton vs. Tottenham Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
22 January 2020
Southampton and Tottenham come together in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday, just a few weeks since the clubs met in the Premier League. The Saints are looking for more of the same this weekend, while Spurs are desperately trying to inject some positivity into their season.
Danny Ings scored the only goal of the game as Southampton beat Tottenham 1-0 at St Mary’s on New Year’s Day. Spurs won 2-1 on home soil earlier this season, while six of the last seven meetings between the teams have all ended in home wins, with four Tottenham victories and a draw at St Mary’s in the other.
Yan Valery is nearing a return to full fitness for Southampton, but this game is set to come too soon for the French youngster. Apart from that, Jan Bednarek is the only other player missing for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. The defender opened the scoring against Wolverhampton last weekend but is struggling with an Achilles injury.
Harry Kane continues to be a big miss for Tottenham, with the England captain continuing his lengthy recovery from surgery on his hamstring. Moussa Sissoko is another long-term absence being keenly felt, although Tanguy Ndombele, Ben Davies and Danny Rose could all be available for this game. Huge Lloris is also nearly ready to return.
Southampton vs. Tottenham Preview and Predictions
Southampton may have thrown away a two-goal lead to lose at home to Wolves last weekend, but the Saints have been on the march over winter after a dreadful start to the campaign. Tottenham meanwhile have been stuttering their way through the whole season, but could a strong FA Cup run prove to be the key behind a Jose Mourinho revival?
Prior to the midweek round of Premier League fixtures, Spurs had managed only one win in six matches, the 2-1 FA Cup third round replay victory over Championship side Middlesbrough. The north London outfit are seriously missing talisman Kane, evidenced by their failure to score in their goalless draw at Watford last weekend.
Mourinho needs to find a solution to this huge problem sooner rather than later, although with a number of injuries to contend with, the pragmatic Portuguese may decide to rest his big hitters for this cup game.
That would give Southampton even more of an edge than their wonderful recent form and victory over Tottenham just a few weeks ago already gives them. With that in mind, we expect to see plenty of money on the home team here, with the Saints priced as the 2.70 underdogs. Spurs are available at 2.35, while the draw is 3.45.
Southampton to win to nil at 4.85
This bet could be worth a look if you think Tottenham’s goalscoring troubles without main man Kane are set to continue.
Ings to score first at 3.80
The Southampton striker already has 16 goals this season, including 10 in 13 prior to the Saints’ trip to Crystal Palace on Tuesday. He also scored the only goal of the game against Spurs earlier this month.
