Bramall Lane - Premier League
High-flying Sheffield United welcome Manchester United to Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon, with Chris Wilder’s Blades currently occupying fifth place. A point behind in seventh, the Red Devils can leapfrog their hosts in the Premier League table with a win this weekend.
The clubs last met in the FA Cup in January 2016, with a strong United team stealing the tie 1-0 courtesy of a 93rd minute penalty from Wayne Rooney. The Manchester outfit won both fixtures between the sides the last time Sheffield United were in the Premier League, 2-1 away before a 2-0 success back at Old Trafford.
Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is unavailable for this game, with the on-loan Blades No.1 ineligible to face his parent club. That could mean a debut for Michael Verrips who signed on a free transfer in the summer, although Simon Moore is the likelier option to start between the sticks. Elsewhere, John Egan is the only other injury concern for the hosts, with the Irish defender currently rated as 50/50.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sweating on the fitness of arguably his best player in recent weeks. Scott McTominay rolled his ankle in United’s victory over Brighton just before the international break, suffering an injury to the same joint that continues to keep Paul Pogba on the sidelines. Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Axel Tuanzebe, Nemanja Matic and Diogo Dalot are all closing in on a return, but Eric Bailly and Timothy-Fosu Mensah are out.
Sheffield United vs. Manchester United Preview and Predictions
There may only be six points separating Sheffield United in fifth and 17th-placed Aston Villa, but few expected the newly-promoted Blades to be enjoying such a lofty position in the Premier League table after 12 fixtures. Even fewer would’ve expected them to find themselves ahead of Manchester United at this stage.
The Red Devils have shown signs of recovery in recent weeks following a dreadful start to the campaign, but the fact remains that United are an incredible 18 points behind league leaders Liverpool at this early stage. Solskjaer’s young side are going to suffer poor results as they continue to develop though, so the question is whether they’ll drop more points this weekend.
Sheffield United are certainly capable of pulling off an upset, and they are 3.45 for the win. The Blades put in a superb performance away to Tottenham in their last match before the international break, unlucky to only come away with a 1-1 draw. Wilder’s side have beaten Arsenal and Burnley in their last two home games in the league, and play with wonderful spirit.
The Reds will need to match that if they’re to stand a chance of a result on Sunday. They may have lost to Bournemouth in their last away game, but United won three in a row on the road prior to that. With one of those against another newly-promoted side, Norwich City, United are the 2.25 favourites for the win here. At 3.25 though, the draw could be worth a look in this game.
Score draw at 4.30
Sheffield United have shown they are capable of upsetting the odds already this season, and Manchester United’s young side can be vulnerable, particularly away from home.
1-1 draw at 6.05
Doubling down on a score draw, this scoreline could be tempting if the teams do indeed share the spoils this weekend. If you think there’ll be more goals, you can get much bigger odds of 14.00 on a 2-2 draw.
