Tuesday 21 January
Bramall Lane - Premier League
This midweek Premier League fixture sees defending champions Manchester City visit the season’s surprise package, Sheffield United. The Blades are flying high up in sixth place, and Bramall Lane is proving a difficult place to pick up points.
Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne both scored in the second half as City won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium in between Christmas and New Year. That was the first time the teams have met since Sheffield United dumped the Citizens out of the FA Cup back in 2008.
Chris Wilder’s attention to detail in terms of sports science has helped his squad stay fit over the busy winter period. Simon Moore and Michael Verrips are both expected to be available for this game, which would give the United boss a full set of players to choose from.
Opposite number Pep Guardiola has also got a relatively clean bill of health at the moment. Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane are the only two players set to miss this midweek trip to Yorkshire, with both closing in on a return from long-term knee injuries.
Sheffield United vs. Manchester City Preview and Predictions
Manchester City will probably have to win all of their remaining Premier League fixtures if they want to have any chance of retaining their title. Even then, it’s unlikely to be enough in the face of Liverpool’s stunning form. With Sheffield United also in superb form, this could be another hammer blow to the away team’s title ambitions.
The Blades have mixed some impressive football with a steely determination befitting their local area to take themselves into European contention, sitting above the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal for the majority of the campaign.
Wilder’s side have only lost one of their last seven home games in the Premier League, winning four and drawing the other two against Manchester United and a resurgent Watford. This is going to be one of their toughest tests of the season, but the Blades are 8.50 to pass it with a win.
City meanwhile are available at 1.36, making them the clear favourites in the betting. The Citizens have returned to form of late, with the goals starting to flow once more and the attractive passing football evident once more. Nothing but a win will do for the Blues, but considering the home team’s form, the draw could be interesting at 5.25.
Both teams to score at 1.83
City are full of attacking threat, while United have scored in six of their last seven Premier League home games.
City to win and BTTS at 2.65
The Blades have been excellent this term, but City are hitting their stride and are regarded as one of the best teams in Europe on their day.
