Sevilla vs. Athletic Bilbao Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

The title race gets back underway on Saturday, as La Liga’s third place side Sevilla host Europa League hopefulls Athletic Bilbao. If Los Rojiblancos are really going to challenge the very top, they can’t afford to drop home points.

Past Meetings

Honours were shared relatively evenly last season, with both teams winning at home in the league, and away in the Copa Del Rey.

Team News

Julen Lopetegui has a relatively full side to select from and is likely to go for his strongest possible XI in the first game following the winter break. Nolito should be fit having missed the last game, which could see Munir fielded centrally, replacing the misfiring Luuk De Jong.

Gaizka Garita have a somewhat depleted side, especially defensively with both Ander Capa and Oscar De Marcos sidelined. In better news for Bilbao, Aritz Aduriz should be fit, and may start up front alongside Inaki Williams.

Sevilla vs. Athletic Bilbao United Predictions, Preview and Predictions

Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao face off on Satuday, with both sides looking to bounce back from a recent spell of poor form.  The home side are 1.64 to get the win, with the visitors at 5.50 and the draw at 3.90.

Fortunately for the two clubs, La Liga has been relatively open at the top so far this season, with even the biggest sides making frequent mistakes, allowing Sevilla to keep place with Barcelona, and Athletic to reach seventh before the winter break.

However, as the winter break resumes managers will be looking at tweaking their squads to achieve their objectives. For Sevilla, this could see investment in a new forward, as, having sold Wissam Ben Yedder over the summer, they have struggled to find a suitable replacement. Fortunately for Lopetegui, the midfield has stepped up with Ocampos, Ever Banega and Franco Vazquez notching 10 between them.

In Althetic Bilbao’s case, the situation is more difficult, as a policy of recruiting only Basque players, and limited funds will undoubtedly hamper recruitment. With Aduritz retiring at the end of the season, many fear the sales of the club’s two jewels, Inaki Williams and Unai Simon may be necessary to revitalise the squad. Garita will be hoping that he can keep his two star players at the club through January, to give the side a chance of qualifying for Europa come the end of the season.

Saturday’s match will set the tone for the second half of the campagin, and could be the decider in how both clubs move in the transfer window. With little seperating the teams, and a lot on the line, we should be in for an exciting game.

Recommended Bets

Sevilla to win at 1.64

The home side are undoubted favourites, and should be in for a win despite Bilbao holding Real Madrid to a draw in their last game.

Under 3.5 goals at 1.25

Although these games have been relatively high scoring in the past, neither side is in great form going forward this term.
