King Abdullah Sport City - Supercopa de Espana

Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

Saudi Arabia will be treated to a Madrid derby this weekend, as Real Madrid take on Atletico Madrid in the final of the Supercopa de Espana at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium. While Real cruised past Valencia in the semi-finals, Atletico put on a late show to come from behind and beat Barcelona.

Past Meetings

The teams shared a goalless draw when they met at the Wanda Metropolitano towards the end of September, after putting on a 10-goal thriller in the International Champions Cup in July. Five of the last six La Liga meetings between the Madrid rivals have ended all square, with Real winning the other 3-1 in February of last year.

Team News

Both Zinedine Zidane and Diego Simeone played strong teams to reach the final, although Real left Karim Benzema and Eden Hazard back in Spain due to injury and illness. Marco Asensio also misses out as he continues his recovery from a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Diego Costa is the biggest name to miss out for Atletico, as the Spain striker continues his spell on the sidelines due to a hernia. Thomas Lemar is also on the treatment table with a hamstring problem, as reports link the French winger with a move away from the club.

Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid Preview and Predictions

No one quite knew what to expect as the Spanish top flight took its Super Cup to Saudi Arabia for the first time. Fears of a dull set of fixtures with sides showing little interest in claiming glory have been dispelled though, with the two semi-finals yielding nine goals between them.

Atletico Madrid’s comeback victory over Barcelona on Thursday was a real thriller, as Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa both struck in the final 10 minutes to ensure Antoine Griezmann’s goalscoring efforts proved to be in vain. Los Rojiblancos only managed 27% possession against the Catalans, but all six of their efforts on goal were on target, with half of those converted in a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Real Madrid meanwhile eased into a 3-0 lead before Dani Parejo’s injury-time consolation from the penalty spot, with Toni Kroos, Isco and Luka Modric all on target. Luka Jovic’s goalscoring troubles may have continued, but this game gives the young Serbian striker a huge chance to make his mark on Los Blancos.

After so many goals in the semis, and Atletico trouncing Real 7-3 in the ICC in New Jersey during pre-season, neutrals will hope for another high-scoring affair here. If you’re looking for the outright odds, you can back Real at 2.25 for the win, while Atletico are 3.35 and the draw after 90 minutes is 3.30.

Recommended Bets

Score draw after 90 minutes at 4.05

With so many draws between the teams in recent years, another stalemate could be on the cards. Both sides hit the back of the net three times in the semi-finals though, so a repeat of September’s 0-0 would be a surprise.

Jovic to score first at 5.00

The 22-year-old has had a difficult first season in the Spanish capital, managing only one goal in 16 appearances so far. Jovic will lead the line for Los Blancos here though, giving him the chance to start building some momentum.
