Estádio José Alvalade – International Friendly
Reigning European champions Portugal gear up for the defence of their crown at Euro 2020 with this friendly fixture against Israel in Lisbon. The Seleção have a squad packed with talent and should have far too much for their visitors in the mobile online betting for this game.
These countries last crossed paths in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Both matches ended all square, with Israel rescuing a late 1-1 draw at the Estádio José Alvalade after Portugal had done the same in a breathless 3-3 in Ramat Gan. That was their first meeting since Portugal won a 2000 friendly 2-1 in Braga.
Fernando Santos is likely to make some changes to his starting line-up following Friday’s trip to Spain. Portugal certainly have plenty of strength in depth, especially in midfield and attack, through the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Neves, Diogo Jota and João Félix. Cristiano Ronaldo will be desperate to play in his bid to chase down Ali Daei as international football’s record goalscorer.
Israel coach Willibald Ruttensteiner has nothing like the quality possessed by the opposition on Wednesday. PSV Eindhoven forward Eran Zahavi is bearing down on Mordechai Spiegler’s scoring record for the Blue and Whites though, having netted 25 times in his first 62 appearances for his country. Experienced Partizan midfielder Bibras Natkho captains the Israeli side.
Portugal vs. Israel Preview and Predictions
Portugal may have failed to beat Israel the last two times the countries have met, but this current Seleção crop is something altogether different from the 2013 vintage. A serious contender in their bid to retain their European crown this summer, Israel will hope to escape this fixture with their pride intact.
The Blue and Whites failed to qualify for the upcoming Euro 2020, throwing away a strong start to their qualification campaign to lose five of their last seven fixtures against the likes of Poland, Slovenia, Austria and North Macedonia. Despite Zahavi scoring 11 of his country’s 16 goals, they could only finish second-bottom ahead of Latvia.
Israel received another opportunity to qualify through their Nations League performance, but lost their play-off against Scotland on penalties. Portugal are a completely different proposition to any of the teams Israel have faced in recent years, with Israel’s last appearance against a top-10 country coming in a World Cup qualifying defeat to Spain in 2017.
The Seleção will control this game, which they come into on the back of only one defeat - against world champions France - in their 13 matches prior to Friday’s friendly against Spain. With a tough Euro 2020 group looming large, Portugal coach Santos will demand a strong performance from his players here, and we could see the Seleção ramp up a big scoreline.
Portugal to win and BTTS 3.90
The Seleção only kept one clean sheet in their five games prior to the Spain match, a 1-0 home win against Azerbaijan. Israel won’t have many chances, but in Zahavi, they have a man capable of taking them.
Portugal to win 3-1 10.50
Santos’s side scored exactly three goals in two of their last four matches prior to Friday, netting two against Serbia in one of the others. This is a scoreline worth looking out for against Israel.
