Saturday 18 January
St. James’ Park – Premier League
Chelsea know they will need to win with fifth-placed Manchester United breathing down their necks for that final Champions League spot. Newcastle meanwhile have shown some decent form in recent weeks, but still lack a little quality where it counts the most.
Chelsea won the first fixture between the two sides earlier in season, winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
The Magpies will be without striker Yoshinori Muto and winger Allan Saint-Maximin, both of whom are unavailable due to inury. Newcastle have four players risking a suspension due to an accumulation of yellow cards. Miguel Almiron, Joelinton, Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar are all at risk.
The Blues meanwhile have no players risking suspension, but are without winger Christian Pulisic until next month with a muscle tear. Expect Frank Lampard to keep the same players that started in the 3-0 win against Burnley.
Newcastle vs. Chelsea Preview and Predictions
This will be a difficult game for both sides. The home side are not easy to break down, and have one of the best defensive records in the league this season. But by the same token, they don’t score nearly enough goals to pose a threat to Chelsea offensively. That’s a major reason why, even at home, Newcastle are out to 6.10 for the victory, with the draw at 4.65.
Chelsea on the other hand have no such issues scoring goals, having just beaten Burnley 3-0 last weekend. Only the three teams above the Blues have scored more league goals this season, and if Chelsa could be better defensively they might be closer to Leicester and Manchester City and fighting for second place. Chelsea have conceded 29 times, to Leicester’s 21 and the champions’ 25.
This game could just end in a Chelsea victory, but not by much. The visitors are 1.51 for the win and their chances of getting it might depend on keeping a clean sheet – which they have only done away from home in the league once in their last five games.
Tammy Abraham first goalscorer 3.40
The striker is in great form at the moment, and could break the deadlock here.
Only one team to score at 1.95
Newcastle struggle for goals, this could be a slender 1-0 win to the away side.
