Manchester United vs. Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

The early evening kick-off on Boxing Day comes from Old Trafford, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United host Newcastle United. The Red Devils are out for revenge as one of their former favourites, Steve Bruce, plots an impressive double over his old club from the away dugout.

Past Meetings

Matty Longstaff was the hero for Newcastle as the teenager produced a moment for the ages in scoring the only goal of the game on his Magpies debut, when Manchester United visited St James’ Park in October. The Reds won both meetings between the teams last season, while Newcastle avenged a 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford with a 1-0 victory back on home soil the campaign before.

Team News

Question marks remain over Paul Pogba’s fitness and dedication to Manchester United, with the midfielder’s recent illness leading to the belief in some quarters that he won’t play for the Reds again. He remains the biggest absentee for the home team, with back-up defenders Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Diogo Dalot all injury concerns.

The visitors also have issues at the back, with captain Jamaal Lascelles still on his way back from injury. He’s a doubt for this game, while Allan Saint-Maximin - impressive in recent weeks - is out with a hamstring problem. Matt Ritchie, Ki Sung-yueng, Karl Darlow and Ciaran Clark are all injured, but Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Almiron should be fit to play.

Manchester United vs. Newcastle Preview and Predictions

Manchester United’s hectic schedule in recent weeks at least sees them enjoy home comforts for this festive fixture, but there will be concerns among the Old Trafford faithful after Newcastle’s victory over the Red Devils earlier in the campaign. The Magpies, and particularly their manager, are enjoying some respite in their mid-table position, making this game something of a free hit.

The Toon Army in the away end will be in full voice as ever, although the goal threat carried by their team could be the difference between them celebrating another famous win or a defeat that could lift their hosts back into Champions League contention. With midfielder Shelvey the club’s top scorer by some distance, big-money summer signing Joelinton has only managed a single Premier League goal so far, despite featuring in all of Newcastle’s fixtures.

That’s contributed to the Magpies only averaging around a goal a game in the league, while for Man United, the attacking fluidity is starting to come. The Reds are most dangerous on the break, so their former captain Bruce is likely to make his team as compact and difficult to break down as possible.

United usually struggle against teams who sit in, lacking the creativity to break down stubborn opposition. They only need one chance on the break to open games up though, and they are the clear favourites at 1.36 for the win. Newcastle are priced at 8.75, while we’ve got the draw at 5.20.

Recommended Bets

Man United to win to nil at 2.15

Despite heavy investment in their forward line, Newcastle have struggled to hit the back of the net on a regular basis this season, so this bet could be a good way to improve your odds on the home win.

Newcastle to win 1-0 at 23.00

If you fancy Newcastle to put in another dogged performance and come away with the double over United, this scoreline could be interesting. Newcastle’s last three victories over the Reds have all finished 1-0, including one at Old Trafford.
