Sunday 20 October
Old Trafford - Premier League
English football’s historic derby returns as Manchester United host Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday. A win over the Reds would boost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure hugely.
Manchester United managed to hold Liverpool to a goalless draw when this fixture was played out last season, however, Jurgen Klopp’s side managed an easy 3-1 win when the sides met at Anfield.
Doubt remains over the fitness of Paul Pogba, who was pictured with a cast on during the international break but will reportedly feature on Sunday. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial are all in contention to start against Liverpool, in what would be a much needed boost for Solsjaer.
Alisson Becker may start for Liverpool, having completed his rehabilitation from injury, although Klopp may avoid throwing his star goalkeeper in at the deep end. Mohamed Salah is expected to be fit, despite picking up a knock before the international break.
Manchester United vs. Liverpool Preview and Predictions
It has been a long time since Manchester United and Liverpool were so unevenly matched going into Sundays match between the two. Fans would have to look back to the later reign of Sir Alex Ferguson, although at that time it was United that was the dominant force in the Premier League. Now it’s Liverpool, available to win at 1.77.
Now, Liverpool are the ones topping the table, having won all eight of their opening games, to establish an eight point lead clear of their nearest rivals. Following last year’s disappointment, fans are already beginning to hope that their early season form will be enough to stave off yet another last-minute collapse.
However, the season is still young, and Klopp’s side will have to prove themselves against a range of opposition to get over the finish line. Solskjaer’s side may not be the behemoth they once were, but have a number of players looking to make a name for themselves, not to mention a goalkeeper that is the best in the world on his day.
If the former club legend can get his strongest XI playing together there is no reason they can’t cause Liverpool some problems, and with players such as Marcus Rashford enjoying a confidence boosting international break, and others using the two weeks to recover from injuries, they may be able to do just that. The United win is available at 4.50, with the draw 3.95.
Sunday’s game may no longer be the highest quality derby in the Premier League, but if the players raise to the occasion, it has the potential to be one of the most entertaining.
Sadio Mane to score anytime at 2.40
The Senegalese winger has been in top-form this season, and will be a real test for Wan-Bissaka, who is not 100% fit.
Liverpool to score first at 1.50
An early goal for Klopp’s team would force United to open up, exposing them to Liverpool’s pacey wingers.
