Wednesday 22 January
Old Trafford – Premier League
Manchester United face Burnley on Wednesday evening, looking to put pressure on the Premier League top four. The Clarets could do with the points after a poor run of form.
United won the reverse fixture, with Anthony Martial scoring late in the first half and Marcus Rashford adding a second late in the second half.
Marcus Rashford is certain to miss out, having been injured in a mid-week tie against Wolves. With Paul Pogba also sidelined, Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer may be short of creativity on Wednesday and may have to bring Andrea Perreira in to cover the attacking midfield position.
Ashely Barnes faces a lengthly spell on the sidelines through injury, although Jay Rodriguez should be fit to return, replacing Jeff Hendricks up front. Johann Berg Gudmundsson is also expected to miss out, meaning Aaron Lennon should keep his place on the flank.
Manchester United vs. Burnley Predictions, Preview and Predictions
With Burnley in indifferent form going into Wednesday’s game, this fixture provides the perfect opporunity for Solkjaer to get Manchester United back into gear. The home side are 1.36 to win the match, with the visitors out to 8.75 and even the draw a fairly big price at 5.10.
The Clarets were easily beaten at Stamford Bridge in their last away match, with Ashley Barnes’ absence particularly notable. Sean Dyche’s side offered very little going forward, and were ultimately unlocked by Chelsea’s front line. In order to avoid a similar fate, Burnley are going to have to make some tactical changes.
This will likely play into Solkjaer’s hands, as with two of his most creative players sidelined, the manager may struggle to unlock any stubborn defences. Anthony Martial and Juan Mata may both be in good form, but are unlikely to have much luck aerially against the imposing Burnley centre-backs.
Burnley will be the ideal opponent for United players to play with the ball at their feet. If they can perform as well as they did last month against the Clarets, the should be in for an easy win.
Manchester United to win to nil at 2.15
Burnley have offered little going forward in recent weeks, and United should be value for the win.
A penalty conceeded by either side in 90 minutes at 2.10
Manchester United have won the most penalties in the league this season, more than double any other team.
