Wednesday 10 March
Etihad Stadium - Premier League
The most in-form team in the Premier League play host to the side on the worst run in the division, as Manchester City meet Southampton on Wednesday night. Surely there’s only one winner at the Etihad Stadium, so we’re searching for some value in the latest online betting football odds for this fixture.
Raheem Sterling’s early goal was enough to hand City a 1-0 victory at St Mary’s the week before Christmas. Southampton beat the Blues by the same scoreline at home last season, ending a run of seven straight City victories in this fixture. The Citizens scored 20 goals during that particular sequence, which included a big 6-1 win at the Etihad in November 2018.
City manager Pep Guardiola only has one injury concern at present. Nathan Ake is nearly ready for a return, but the Dutch defender will struggle to get into the starting line-up thanks to the form of Ruben Dias and John Stones, not to mention Aymeric Laporte.
How Ralph Hasenhuttl would love to have the luxury of leaving out players as good as Ake. The Southampton boss has bemoaned his squad depth in the last week, with Theo Walcott, Michael Obafemi and Oriol Romeu among the injury absentees for the visitors here.
Manchester City vs. Southampton Preview and Predictions
Manchester City are cantering towards the title, and anything other than sky blue ribbons on the Premier League trophy come May would constitute an almighty upset. Even a failure to beat Southampton in this game would constitute a huge shock for the table-topping Blues.
The Citizens took a 15-match winning run into Sunday’s derby against Manchester United. City scored 38 goals during that run, keeping 10 clean sheets in the process. Guardiola’s side will dominate possession on Wednesday night, and if they score early, this could be a very long 90 minutes for Southampton.
The Saints have been on a shocking run of form, failing to win any of their nine games prior to their trip to Sheffield United on Saturday. The south coast outfit conceded 24 goals in losing eight of those fixtures, with nine of those coming in the demolition by Man United.
If they don’t start winning, Southampton are going to find themselves dragged down into the relegation battle. They’ve certainly been in relegation form of late, making the away win here extremely unlikely at 11.00. City are the overwhelming favourites at 1.23, while the draw’s priced at 6.75.
Man City to win to nil at 1.76
City only conceded 17 goals through their first 27 Premier League games of the season, while Southampton failed to register in five of their eight defeats prior to the weekend.
Man City to win 6-0 at 57.00
City put six past Southampton a couple of years ago, and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if the Blues do the same again here against one of the league’s worst defences.
