Etihad Stadium – Premier League
Reigning champions Manchester City look to keep their fading chances of retaining their title alive as they welcome Crystal Palace to the Etihad Stadium. Palace have shown they can scalp the bigger teams in the division, but this looks to be too big an ask of them this time around.
City emerged comfortable victors against the Eagles in their last match in October, but Palace did win here in December 2018. City scored first but Palace hit three, with Kevin De Bruyne’s late goal not enough to give City even a point.
The home side have no fresh injury troubles. However England’s Raheem Sterling and midfielder Rodri are one booking away from a suspension. Expect Pep Guardiola to stick with the same side that pummelled Aston Villa 6-1.
Palace meanwhile have also no new injury concerns. Midfielder James McCarthy is one yellow card away from a one game suspension.
Manchester City vs. Crystal Palace Preview and Predictions
Man City’s title hopes are fading fast. Liverpool’s march to the title is relentless, with Guardiola’s City side barely clinging on. However at home City are still a formidable opponent for any side, and you expect them to give Palace the run-a-round. Indeed, City are down to 1.09 for the win, with Palace at a massive 26.25 and even the draw at 10.75.
The odds are a sign of the gap in quality between the sides, and City’s excellent recent form. They’ve not lost in any competition since December 27, scoring 17 goals in five games. And while six of those were against struggling Villa and lower league Port Vale, they also put two past Sheffield United and Everton and three past Manchester United.
Palace, like all Roy Hodgson sides, are rooted in a strong defence, but find it hard to score goals. If City score early, don’t expect Palace to strike back – even with City having been somewhat leaky in defence lately. Those five games have seen four goals conceded. City you imagine will still emerge victorious, however.
Man City to score over 3.5 goals at 2.25
Expect City to win and by a few goals. They should simply have too much going forward for Crystal Palace to handle, having scored on average more than three goals per game in their last five outings.
Over 3.5 goals at 1.76
When City get purring, they can be unstoppable and if they score early, you can expect more goals to fly. Over 3.5 goals could be a good bet to make.
