Manchester City vs. Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

Saturday’s late fixture is a beauty, as champions Manchester City host the young upstarts of Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. The visitors actually start the game a place above Pep Guardiola’s side, with City down in fourth and nine points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Past Meetings

Raheem Sterling scored the winning kick as City beat Chelsea in the League Cup final following a goalless draw in late February, the last time these two clubs met. Chelsea won the first Premier League meeting between the sides 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, before the Citizens put Maurizio Sarri and his team to the sword with a 6-0 victory in the return at the Etihad.

Team News

Bernardo Silva is suspended for City following an FA ban for what was deemed to be a racially insensitive tweet sent to his team mate Benjamin Mendy. Goalkeeper Ederson should be fit to return between the sticks though to replace the suspect Claudio Bravo, in a major boost for the hosts. Aymeric Laporte, Leroy Sane and Oleksandr Zinchenko are all out injured though.

Frank Lampard has concerns over recent star performer Christian Pulisic due to a hip problem, while Ross Barkley is also struggling with an ongoing injury. Fellow midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is set to be out for another month, while a similar timescale has been set for central defender Antonio Rudiger.

Manchester City vs. Chelsea Preview and Predictions

It’s the Blues against the Blues this weekend, with the darker shade of shirts worn by the team higher in the table. Chelsea and their young guns are flying high at the moment, while Manchester City’s defeat to Liverpool last time out has dealt a huge blow to their hopes of winning a third successive Premier League title.

Chelsea’s victory over City last season was their only success in their last six games against the Etihad outfit in all competitions, with City winning all five of the others without conceding a single goal. The current Chelsea crop are full of optimism though after a six-game winning streak that’s followed their own defeat to Liverpool.

Tammy Abraham is in fine form after netting 10 goals in 12 Premier League appearances so far, one more than City counterpart Sergio Aguero. The Argentine, though, helped himself to a hat-trick the last time these teams faced off in Manchester and City’s fine record against the west London side cannot be ignored.

Guardiola and his players know they can ill afford another slip-up in the face of Liverpool’s devastating form, and the home team are the clear favourites in the betting to return to immediate winning ways this weekend. City are 1.43 to claim the three points, while Chelsea are 7.25 and the draw is available at 4.75.

Recommended Bets

City to win and BTTS at 2.35

The Citizens have an excellent defensive record against Chelsea in recent meetings, but they are without their best defender, Laporte, and the visitors are in a rich vein of scoring form. The home team should still get the job done here though.

City to win and over 3.5 goals at 2.55

City’s game against Liverpool was full of exciting attacking football, and this game could follow suit. If it does, we could be in for a high-scoring encounter, with both sides boasting plenty of forwards in good nick.
