Relegation-threatened Mainz host Bayern Munich as the home side desperately search for points to pull themselves out of the relegation zone. Bayern, meanwhile, are chasing down Leipzig at the top of the Bundesliga.

Past Meetings

Bayern were rampant in their first meeting earlier in the season, winning 6-1 at home in September. They also won 6-0 at the Allianz Arena in March last year, 2-1 at Mainz in October 2018 and 2-0 at Mainz in February of that year. Mainz haven’t beaten Bayern anywhere since a 2016 win in Munich.

Team News

Mainz are without midfielder Edimilson Fernandes with a knee injury, and the 23-year-old is expected to be out for some time.

The visitors meanwhile have no fresh injury worries, and could welcome back midfielder Javi Martinez after a torn muscle issue.

Mainz vs. Bayern Munich Preview and Predictions

Mainz are on a bad run of form over their last five games, winning only once. They face a Bayern side who have won every single one of their last five encounters, and have rocketed back up the table after an indifferent start to the season. They go into the weekend’s fixtures only three points behind RB Leipzig, and are 1.20 to get a crucial win here.

Mainz lost the first fixture 6-1 this season, and whilst a repeat performance won’t happen again this time, it’s difficult to see anything other than a Bayern victory. The home win is priced at 13.50, with the draw at 7.25, but it would be one of the shocks of the season if Mainz can suddenly find the form to stop the Bayern juggernaught.

With only one win in their last five games – 5-0 away at Werder Bremen, one of only two teams lower in the standings than Mainz – there’s little to suggest Achim Beierlorzer’s side can upset the form book. It should be a straightforward Bayern win, and by a few goals.

Recommended Bets

Bayern to win at 1.20

Expect a Bayern victory, Mainz are in a bad run of form, combine this with Bayern’s great form, and there will only be one winner in this contest.

Over 3.5 goals at 1.66

Whilst there won’t be a repeat of the six goals that were scored in the first game of the season, Bayern will likely score several, as Mainz have one of the worst defences in the Bundesliga.
