Liverpool vs. Southampton Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

Saturday 1 February
Anfield - Premier League
Liverpool’s first-team squad will take on Southampton in their final game before the Premier League enjoys its first ever winter break. The Reds are embroiled in controversy regarding their FA Cup fourth-round replay against Shrewsbury Town, but there’s nothing controversial about their commanding lead at the top of the English top flight.
Liverpool won 2-1 when these teams met at St Mary’s in August, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino on target for Jurgen Klopp’s side. The Reds have won five in a row against Southampton, whose last Premier League victory against the Merseysiders was back in March 2016.
Mane seems to have little chance of repeating his goalscoring heroics on Saturday, after the Senegal international pulled up with a hamstring injury last week against Wolves. Adam Lallana should be okay following an illness though, while Xherdan Shaqiri and James Milner are expected to be in contention.
Shane Long has a swollen knee that could keep him out of this game, while Stuart Armstrong is also struggling due to a hip problem. Cedric Soares is out for a few weeks with a ligament issue, while the visitors could also be without Yan Valery and Jannik Vestergaard for this difficult trip north.
Liverpool vs. Southampton Preview and Predictions
Southampton last tasted victory at Anfield back in September 2013, and there appears to be little danger of that changing this weekend. Liverpool have scored 13 goals and conceded only two in winning their last five matches against the Saints, although Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have enjoyed a significant upturn in form of late.
The Saints have risen from relegation candidates to ninth in the table following a run of seven wins in their last 11 Premier League fixtures. They’ve only lost one of their last seven, winning five, with Wolves coming back from 2-0 down to inflict that sole defeat.
The south coast outfit are one of the division’s in-form side, but they haven’t faced a team like Liverpool on their impressive run. The Reds are in a league of their own at the moment, so the away win looks fanciful at 10.50.
Liverpool may have to deal with an extra fixture in midweek, as they make up their game in hand away to West Ham in a bid to move 19 points clear of Manchester City, but they’ve shown an incredible ability to get the job done in all kinds of circumstances this season. With 22 wins and no defeats from their opening 23 matches, the hosts are 1.28 for the win, while even the draw looks highly unlikely at 5.85.
Liverpool to win to nil at 2.15
Southampton have failed to score in five of their last seven Premier League matches against the Reds, including their last three trips to Anfield.
Liverpool to win 3-0 at 9.50
Klopp’s side have won their last two home games against Southampton 3-0, and they’re more than capable of repeating that scoreline here.
