Lazio vs. Bayern Munich Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

Tuesday 23 February
Stadio Olimpico – Champions League
Champions league holders Bayern Munich resume the defense of their title on Tuesday as they travel to face Lazio. The home side aren’t challenging for the title domestically as they were last season, while Bayern remain the juggernaught they have been for years and always place highly in Champions League winners markets for football betting online.
The two sides have not met in competitive football.
Luis Felipe remains sidelined for Simone Inzaghi’s side meaning Mateo Musacchio may be handed a start following a poor peformance from Wesley Hoedt against Inter. Thomas Strakosha is also out injured with Pepe Reina having secured his position in goal. Felipe Caicedo has returned from a spell in the treatment room and may feature alongside Ciro Immobile.
Hansi Flick has a number of injury concerns with Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka and Javi Martinez all side-lined through injury, whilst Thomas Muller misses out due to a positive Covid-19 diagnosis. Jerome Boateng should return having missed a number of games for personal reasons and may take the spot of David Alaba.
Lazio vs. Bayern Munich Preview and Predictions
Lazio welcome Bayern Munich to Rome on Tuesday as they make their return to the Champions League knock-out phase for the first time in two decades. The hosts may be cursing their luck to draw last season’s winners in the Round of 16, as the Aquile are just 5.50 to win in their own stadium. The draw is 4.55.
Bayern Munich have just resumed their domestic season after a spell out to win the Club World Cup, earning an unprecidented sextuple in German football. Unfortunately this success came at a cost to Hansi Flick’s side who will be without Serge Gnabry for the forseeable future. With Thomas Muller set to spend the next few weeks in isolation, the Champions League favourites are without two of their starters.
Even so, Bayern’s stregnth in depth makes for more than a match for their hosts, with Simone Inzaghi’s side showing their defensive frailties in a recent defeat to Inter Milan. With Luiz Felipe absent Lazio lack the solidity at the back that provided the platform for last season’s impressive finish. Whilst Ciro Immobile may get the headlines for goalscoring, it was their defence which finished second-best in Serie A for goals conceded.
The visitors are heavy favourties at 1.55 to win on Tuesday, however, Lazio have proved this season that they are not to be underestimated. The Aquile beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1 when the German club came to the Stadio Olimpico in the Champions League group stage, utlising blistering counter-attacks to great effect.
Much like that game, Lazio will likely allow Bayern to dominate possession, instead leading them into tracks and looking to rapidly release Immobile. The visitors may have one of the best defenses in the world, but they don’t have the fastest back-line and could be at risk of conceding on the counter.
Bayern to win and both teams to score at 2.50
Lazio will offer plenty going forward but will likely be outscored by their opponents. Robert Lewandowski’s presence is usually a good guarantee of goals.
Over 2.5 goals scored at 1.54
This bet would have paid out in six of Lazio’s last seven games and nine of Bayern’s last 13.
