La Liga restarts after the international break on Saturday, with Barcelona travelling north to face Getafe. The club from the outskirts of Madrid are only two places behind the Catalans and level on points, but have played a game more.

Past Meetings

Barcelona managed a narrow win over Getafe when the teams last met, with Antoine Griezmann and Sergi Roberto scoring in the first half, before Angel Rodriguez caused a scare by pulling one back with just 25 minutes left to play.

Team News

Jose Bordalas is not expected to make many changes to his side, although Jaime Mata will hope to start up front over Angel Rodriguez. Marc Cucurella will start against his former club while new signing Ener Unal may will also aim to make a claim to the centre-forward position after returning from injury.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains side-lined for Barcelona following a knee operation in the summer, with Samuel Umtiti and Jordi Alba also out due to injury. Ronald Koeman is expected to rotate for Saturday’s game, with Miralem Pjanic, Francisco Trincao and Sergino Dest all tipped to start.

Getafe vs. Barcelona Predictions, Preview and Predictions

Getafe host Barcelona on Saturday with the two sides currently level on seven points, although the Blaugrana have a game in hand. The hosts are 4.95 to win, the visitors 1.76 and a draw is 3.75.

An unsurprising start to the season for Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona has seen fixture congestion cause the Catalan club to play two fewer league games than 10 other La Liga clubs. Consequently Lionel Messi and Co. found themselves in fifth place in the league table over the international break, a position that they will want to rectify as soon as possible.

Getafe have enjoyed a similarly positive pre-season, with their only defeat coming at the hands of the in-form Real Sociedad. Jose Bordalas’s side finished last season in eighth place in the league, and occupy a similar position now having placed just four games. The club have stregnthened over the summer, bringing in Turkish striker Unal from Real Valladolid and singing Cucurella outright from Barcelona.

These attacking reinforcements, including the arrival of Dario Poveda are unlikely to place a significant role on Saturday. Barcelona’s visits to the Alfonso Perez have seen the home side take two or fewer shots on target on the last two occasions, with less than 40% possession.

Instead, the impetus will be on the visitors to break the deadlock, with Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho all scoring for their countries during the international break. Barcelona have been far from their fluid attacking best this season, but have the individual talent to break down the majority of teams.

Bordalas’ assignment for this weekend will be to disrupt Barcelona’s momentum, and he will be hoping that heavy rotations due to the upcoming Champions League fixture will work in his favour.
