Freiburg vs. Bayern Munich Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
18 December 2019
Wednesday 18 December
Schwarzwald-Stadion - Bundesliga
Bayern Munich end the 2019 Bundesliga schedule in the unfamiliar position of fifth place, and could drop further if they lose to sixth-place Freiburg. Two points separate the sides, who had very different ambitions when the season got underway.
The last two meetings between Freiburg and Bayern both ended 1-1 – at Freiburg in March, and in Munich in November 2018. Lucas Holer scored in both games.
The last time there was a winner was in the game before that, when Bayern romped to a 4-0 away win. Freiburg last beat Bayern in May 2015, thanks to a last minute Nils Petersen goal.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich has doubts over midfielder Jerome Gondorf, through illness, and goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow, who has a hamstring problem, while Jeong Woo-yeong is on international duty with South Korea. Also expected to be missing are defenders Lukas Kubler and Philipp Lienhart, midfielder Lino Templemann and forward Luca Waldschmitt.
Bayern will likely have to contend with the absence of Corentin Tolisso, while Kingsley Coman, Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Sule are also on the injured list
Freiburg vs. Bayern Munich Preview and Predictions
There are distinctly different reactions to being in the top six for Freiburg and Bayern – the former would have considered sixth a revelation at the start of the season, while for the latter, fifth is a disaster.
Bayern have already changed coach this season, removing Niko Kovac and putting his assisant, Hans-Dieter Flick, in temporary charge. There have been some impressive results since – the weekend’s 6-1 hammering of Werder Bremen the latest – but defeats to Bayer Leverkusen and Gladbach suggest there is still a gap between the Bavarians and their domestic rivals. It’s a stark change from the norm, and Bayern are 1.23 to put it right – but it can’t be guaranteed either.
Freiburg have only lost once at home this season and it’s no exaggeration to say the Schwarzwald-Stadion has become something of a fortress in its last season in use. The Breisgau club are on the move for next year, and a win over dominant Bayern would be a moment to savour. Their form has however been indifferent in recent outings, with Freiburg’s last five games in all competitions bringing two draws, two defeats and just one win. That win was at home, though, against Wolfsburg. They’re 11.25 to get another one, with a draw – a better result for the home side than the away side – at 6.95
Freiburg to score first at 4.50
Freiburg scored after three minutes in the teams’ last meeting – and this is a more vulnerable Bayern than that. Even if they can’t hold on for all three points, they can get off to a strong start.
Freiburg double chance at 4.20
The table says there isn’t much between the teams – and players and fans are always more up for it when the champions come to visit. Freiburg can upset the odds and even a draw is a good result for the home team – one they’re capable of getting.
