Stadio Artemio Franchi – Coppa Italia
Inter Milan take a break from their Serie A title challenge with a Coppa Italia midweek trip to Florence to face Fiorentina. Any silverware would be welcome for Inter as justification Antonio Conte is on the right path, but the coach might choose to rest a few of his key players for league action.
Inter Milan edged out a 4-3 thriller in Serie A action between these two sides earlier this season with Antonio Conte’s side unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Fiorentina in all competitions.
Inter did need two late goals to take the points in that seven-goal affair, with Romelu Lukaku making the score 3-3 in the 87th minute, and Danilo D’Ambrosio grabbing the winner two minutes later.
Fiorentina haven’t beaten Inter in any competition since a 5-4 triumph in Florence in April 2017.
Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli could be without two of his key stars for this tie with Giacomo Bonventura and Franck Ribery both likely to miss out through injury.
Matias Vecino remains sidelined due to injury for Inter Milan, though some recent reports suggest he is close to a return, but Arturo Vidal and Nicolo Barella should be OK to play, with Ivan Perisic set to return to the starting XI.
Fiorentina vs. Inter Milan Preview and Predictions
Fiorentina have generally edged past the last 16 stage in recent seasons in the Coppa Italia with a quarter final or semi final appearance in all four seasons since 2017. Prandelli’s team have struggled in league action in recent weeks with just one win in the last two and a half months forcing them down to 14th in the table.
Inter Milan’s title push hit a dent last time out as Conte’s team lost 2-1 away at Sampdoria, in their first league defeat since October 17. Conte’s squad is deeper enough to fit on two domestic fronts, with no European football at the club in 2021, they will be in amongst the title race in the coming months.
With Conte’s able to rest and rotate players, without the standard of his team slipping, they should have enough to cruise on into the last eight, with an away win priced at 1.74. The home side are 4.05 to win, while the draw after 90 minutes is 4.20. To qualify, the odds shift to 3.00 for Fiorentina, and 1.37 for Inter.
Lukaku has been the main man for Inter Milan’s again this season and any success the Nerazzurri have will be built on his back. The Belgium international also netted in Inter’s league win over Fiorentina earlier this season and should retain his starting spot for this game despite their Serie A commitments, as Inter don’t have an adequate replacement for Lukaku in their squad.
Inter Milan to win 2-1 at 7.00
Inter Milan could be on course for a domestic double if they stay in the title race and secure a favourable draw in the Coppa Italia and Conte’s visitors will be confident of having enough to get past Fiorentina in this one.
Both teams to score at 1.60
Despite struggling to maintain any sort of consistent form this season, Fiorentina have remained solid in front of goal, with at least a goal in four of their last seven games. Inter, meanwhile, have Lukaku, as well as Lautaro Martinez, who are reliable sources of goals.
