Everton vs. Arsenal Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

Two clubs fresh from sacking their managers collide this weekend, as Everton and Arsenal kick off this year’s festive schedule in Saturday’s early fixture. Whereas the Gunners continue to toil following Unai Emery’s departure, the Toffees have looked rejuvenated since Marco Silva was relieved of his duties.

Past Meetings

Both teams won to nil in their home game against the other last term, with Everton triumphing 1-0 at Goodison Park courtesy of an early Phil Jagielka strike. That match brought Arsenal’s run of four straight victories over the Blues to an end, where the north London side outscored the Toffees by 15 goals to four.

Team News

Duncan Ferguson has proclaimed his love for a good old-fashioned 4-4-2 during his time as Everton’s interim boss, meaning Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks set to continue up front alongside Richarlison here. Theo Walcott and Jean-Philippe Gbamin are out until the new year through injury, although Gylfi Sigurdsson, Fabian Delph and Djibril Sidibe should be fit this weekend. Leighton Baines is expected to start at left-back due to Lucas Digne’s groin problem.

Arsenal also have issues on the left flank of their defence, with Sead Kolasinac expected to miss this game with a sprained ankle and Kieran Tierney out for a few months with a dislocated shoulder. Fellow full-back Hector Bellerin should be available on Saturday, although Rob Holding and Dani Ceballos are out. Granit Xhaka could make his return following a concussion.

Everton vs. Arsenal Preview and Predictions

Both of these clubs could have a new manager in situ by the time this game kicks off, with Carlo Ancelotti and Mikel Arteta appearing the most likely candidates for the pre-match handshake. There’s less of a rush for Everton’s interim boss Ferguson to be replaced by a permanent fixture in the dugout though, with the Toffees looking much more like their old selves under the Scot.

Last weekend’s 1-1 draw away to Manchester United was close to being a hard-fought victory at a ground that’s historically been a tough place for the Blues to go. Still, a point at Old Trafford was a solid result on the back of Everton’s impressive 3-1 win against Chelsea the week before.

Ferguson has his charges playing to a more intense tune than under Silva, epitomised by the revitalised Calvert-Lewin who put in a performance befitting his manager against United. A similar display this weekend against an Arsenal back line that continues to lack leadership and steel could be the difference between the sides.

The Gunners have been indecisive both on and off the pitch of late, winning only one of their last 12 matches in all competitions. Freddie Ljungberg has looked lost in the dugout, and Arsenal fans may be travelling north with severe trepidation this weekend. Indeed, Everton are the favourites for the win at 2.40, while the visitors are 2.80 and the draw is 3.75.

Recommended Bets

Everton to win and BTTS at 3.80

The Toffees haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last eight Premier League fixtures, and only one in their last 16, but the home team are in good form right now and beat Arsenal in last season’s corresponding fixture too.

Calvert-Lewin to score anytime at 2.50

The 22-year-old scored a brace in Everton’s last Premier League home game against Chelsea and outmuscled David de Gea for the Toffees’ goal against Manchester United on Sunday, and is 6.00 to break the deadlock this weekend.
