The Netherlands will enjoy home advantage at the Johan Cruyff Arena when they host Ukraine in their Euro 2020 opener on Sunday. With Austria and North Macedonia kicking off proceedings in Group C just before this game, a good start for these two countries is crucial in the football betting online.

Past Meetings

This will be the first ever competitive meeting between Holland and Ukraine. They have only ever crossed paths twice before, with the Netherlands winning a 2008 friendly in Rotterdam 3-0, before a 1-1 draw in another friendly in Donetsk two years later.

Team News

Donny van de Beek has been ruled out of the Euros due to injury, with Oranje coach Frank de Boer deciding not to call up a replacement for the Manchester United midfielder. Memphis Depay leads the line ahead of his reported move to Barcelona, while outgoing Liverpool man Georginio Wijnaldum will play in midfield after appearing to choose Paris Saint-Germain over Barca.

Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko has a good amount of experience to call upon, not least in the form of goalkeeper and captain, Andriy Pyatov. He is set to win his 98th cap on Sunday, while West Ham United forward Andriy Yarmolenko is also bearing down on a century of international appearances.

Netherlands vs. Ukraine Preview and Predictions

Getting off to a good start is always key in a major tournament, although this is probably the toughest assignment for both the Netherlands and Ukraine in Group C of Euro 2020. A defeat for either country would be far from terminal, especially given the fact that finishing third could still be enough to get out of the group stage, although defeat remains far from ideal.

As one of the host countries, the Netherlands will be fairly confident they won’t slip up in this game in front of their home fans. The Oranje have only lost one of their last 10 matches, a 4-2 defeat to Turkey in World Cup qualifying back in March.

However, the Dutch were second best against Scotland in their first warm-up friendly for the Euros, scoring late on to salvage a 2-2 draw in the Algarve. De Boer’s side beat Georgia 3-0 in their second friendly, with Depay netting his third goal across the two fixtures.

Holland are the 1.62 odds-on favourites for the win here, with Ukraine priced at 6.00. The Yellow and Blue won both of their recent friendlies, beating Northern Ireland 1-0 before a 4-0 triumph over Cyprus.

Shevchenko’s side drew four times in a row before that though, including against world champions France in a World Cup qualifier. Another stalemate on Sunday is 3.65, which would be a hugely encouraging result for the Ukrainians.

Recommended Bets

1-1 draw at 8.50

All four of the games Ukraine drew prior to their two Euro 2020 warm-up fixtures finished 1-1, and this scoreline could be on the cards once again in a game both teams will be desperate not to lose.

Depay to score first at 4.50

The Oranje forward has been in excellent form of late, scoring 12 goals in his last 12 games for club and country. He has five in his last three for Holland, and is 28.00 to score first in a 2-1 Dutch victory.
