Equatorial Guinea vs. Ivory Coast Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
07 January 2022
Japoma Stadium – Africa Cup of Nations
Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast kick off their 2021 AFCON campaigns knowing they face a tough time of it in Group E. The Elephants have the squad to go far and anyone looking at the mobile online betting will do well to follow both these teams very closely.
There have only been two meetings between the pair before, with Equatorial Guinea yet to record a victory. The first clash came in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012, with the Elephants recording a comfortable 3-0 win. They most recently met in a 2015 friendly in which a 1-1 draw was played out.
Equatorial Guinea come into the tournament on a five-game unbeaten run, but they will be without influential midfielder Pedro Obiang. The National Thunder captain is Emilio Nsue, who is remarkably without a club.
Ivory Coast manager Patrice Beaumelle has a raft of talent to choose from. The likes of Wilfried Zaha and Sébastien Haller in attack, AC Milan’s Franck Kessié in midfield and Serge Aurier and Eric Bailly in defence will form a strong spine for the Elephants.
Equatorial Guinea vs. Ivory Coast Preview and Predictions
Both of these sides will be well aware that Algeria are also in Group E. The defending AFCON champions once again look formidable and both Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast will view this meeting as the perfect opportunity to put themselves in the box seat for tougher challenges ahead.
Equatorial Guinea have gone from strength to strength in recent years with a strong performance in World Cup qualifying as well as having not tasted defeat since September 2021. However, head coach Juan Micha has a lack of top-flight experience to call upon, especially with long-term injury absentee Pedro Obiang unavailable.
Defence is the key area of weakness for the National Thunder and that is an area Ivory Coast are perfectly poised to exploit. Elephants head coach Patrice Beaumelle has arguably the strongest attacking options to choose from in the tournament with Zaha and Sébastien Haller in the squad, but when you throw Nicolas Pépé into the mix there appears to be plenty of threat.
Rather strangely though, there seems to be a lack of dressing room motivation and Beaumelle’s tactics have been brought into question. No doubt the Elephants have the squad to go deep, but could they be their own worst enemy? An Ivory Coast win could and should be the tonic they need to launch a tilt at the title.
Ivory Coast to win at 1.37
There is a chasm in difference between the two squads and if Ivory Coast can get themselves motivated they should overcome a stubborn Equatorial Guinea.
Equatorial Guinea to score first at 4.05
Equatorial Guinea have scored in nine of their last 10 games, making this bet well worth a look at these odds.
