Stamford Bridge - Champions League
Chelsea and Bayern Munich renew their rivalry as Frank Lampard’s Blues host the Bundesliga giants at Stamford Bridge in the last 16 of the Champions League. The Premier League outfit come into the tie as underdogs, but can they take a positive result over to Bavaria for the second leg?
Bayern beat Chelsea on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup the last time the teams met competitively. That was back in 2013, but the Blues secured a much more meaningful penalty shootout victory the year before, defeating Bayern in the final of the Champions League in their own stadium. The teams also met in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2005, with Chelsea edging an entertaining tie 6-5 on aggregate.
Injuries continue to hamper Lampard’s thin squad, with N’Golo Kante the latest player to pick up an issue. The French midfielder’s adductor injury means he joins Tammy Abraham, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic on the treatment table, with that trio in a race to be fit for this crunch game.
There’s no Ivan Perisic for the visitors, as the Croatia winger continues to recover from a broken ankle. Javi Martinez is nearing a return from a thigh injury, although this game could come too soon for the experienced Spaniard. Benjamin Pavard and Jerome Boateng will both be available for this game after serving domestic suspensions at the weekend.
Chelsea vs. Bayern Munich Preview and Predictions
These two clubs haven’t met that many times in Europe’s top club competition over the years, but there’s been fireworks every time they have. This is a tough test for Chelsea’s young squad, which is coming under increasing pressure with Premier League performances on the slide. Especially as Bayern Munich have found their feet under new manager Hans-Dieter Flick.
Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester United last Monday night left them only one point above fifth-placed Tottenham in the Premier League table. The Blues have been weak defensively at times, but there are even bigger problems in front of goal, with Lampard bemoaning his team’s lack of a cutting edge - particularly with Abraham suffering from fitness issues.
The home team will need to be clinical in this round of 16 tie, otherwise Bayern will put them away with ease. The German giants have one of the world’s top marksmen in their ranks, Robert Lewandowski, who’s in fine form this season and banging in the goals for fun.
Die Roten are putting together a timely unbeaten run under Flick, following the painful demise of Niko Kovac in the Allianz Arena hot seat. Top of the Bundesliga and looking to win their eighth straight league title, the 2013 Champions League winners are the 1.80 favourites to beat the champions from the year before in this game. Chelsea are 4.20, while the draw’s available at 4.05.
Bayern Munich to win to nil at 3.35
Even though they had two goals disallowed by VAR, Chelsea looked like they couldn’t hit a barn door for the most part against Manchester United, while Bayern are the favourites to take an advantage into the second leg of this tie.
Lewandowski to score first at 3.25
The Polish hitman helped himself to 10 goals in just five appearances in the group stages of this competition, and is approaching 40 strikes for the season in total with three months of the campaign remaining.
