Brighton vs. Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
10 September 2020
Monday 14 September
Amex Stadium – Premier League
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea summer spending spree will be placed under the microscope as they head to Brighton for their first game of the 2020-21 Premier League season. The London club are looking to challenge at the top of the table again, while Brighton are more concerned with avoiding the very bottom for another season.
Chelsea are unbeaten in their six Premier League meetings against Brighton, with five wins and a drawn since 2017, and a 1-1 draw in a pre-season friendly last month.
Their last league meeting ended the same, on New Year’s Day. Cesar Azpilicueta opened the scoring before Alireza Jahanbaksh equalised shortly before the final whistle.
Brighton boss Graham Potter should start his own summer signings Adam Lallana and Joel Veltman in this game, but Davy Propper and Jose Izquierdo are set to miss out through injury.
Lampard will be without midfielder Mateo Kovacic after his red card in the FA Cup final, but club captain Cesar Azpilicueta should be fit in time to play.
New signing Ben Chilwell misses out with an ankle problem, with Ross Barkley, Christian Pulisic, Billy Gilmour and Tammy Abraham all potentially sidelined.
Brighton vs. Chelsea Preview and Predictions
Brighton ended the 2019-20 Premier League season strongly with an unbeaten run of three games in July. But Potter’s side only returned to preseason training at the end of August, with two friendly draws against the Blues and West Brom.
Chelsea’s 2019-20 season ended in frustration as despite securing a Champions League qualification spot, Lampard’s side lost their FA Cup final against Arsenal. Lampard has opted against too many pre-season games in recent weeks, with their 1-1 draw at the AMEX at the end of August their only warm up game for the 2020-21 campaign. That game was also part of a trial scheme for having fans back in stadiums amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Potter will be confident of an improving season in the coming months, and with Chelsea missing a host of key names, a draw looks to be the best option in this clash, coming in at a price of 4.20. Brighton though are 5.05 for the win, with Chelsea at 1.64.
It will take time for Lampard’s new attacking stars of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech to settle in his side, and against the experience of Brighton, it will be an interesting test. With that in mind, a total under 2.5 goals scored bet is available at 2.05.
A 1-1 draw at 7.25
Lampard will be under pressure in the opening weeks of the season due to his big spending in recent weeks. However, away at a sold Brighton side on the opening day could be a frustrating start for him.
Timo Werner to score anytime at 2.00
Werner’s arrival from RB Leipzig comes with the weight of expectation of scoring 20+ Premier League goals in his first season, and the signs from the Bundesliga look promising, over 20 league goals in two of the last four seasons.
