Borussia Dortmund vs. Mainz Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
14 October 2021
Signal Iduna Park – Bundesliga
Borussia Dortmund look to keep pace with the top of the pack as they welcome Mainz to the Westfalenstadion in the Bundesliga this weekend. Marco Rose’s side may not be at their absolute best, but are 1.39 to win on Saturday according to Spin Sports’ football betting online.
Dortmund had no trouble dispatching Mainz last season, winning 3-1 in the most recent meeting. Raphaël Guerreiro, Jadon Sancho and Julian Brandt all scored for Die Schwarzgelben, with Robin Quasion tucking away a consolation penalty in injury time.
Marco Rose should be able to welcome back Erling Haaland, with his star striker returning from injury. The Dortmund manager has benefitted from the international break and could now have Dan-Axel Zagadou, Thorgan Hazard, Emre Can, Marcel Schmelzer and Mahmoud Dahoud available. As a result, Gio Reyna and Thomas Meunier would be the last two of an injury-hit squad to remain absent.
Bo Svensson may look to make some changes, one of which is enforced given Dominik Kohr’s suspension. Anton Stach is expected to step into central midfield, while Jean-Paul Boëtius may be handed a chance in a more advanced role. Moussa Niakhaté and Ádám Szalai remain sidelined through injury, but Alexander Hack and Aarón Martín could return for Saturday’s game.
Borussia Dortmund vs. Mainz Preview and Predictions
Borussia Dortmund welcome Mainz to Signal Iduna Park hoping for a winning return after the international break. Bo Svensson’s side are without a win in three games and have seen their strong start to the Bundesliga falter in recent weeks.
Mainz finished last season in 12th place. Six points separated them from relegation, with Svensson impressing since signing on as coach in January 2021. Despite not strengthening significantly over the summer, the Rhine-based team continued to improve in the early stages of the season, losing just one game out of six in all competitions.
Unfortunately, a difficult run of fixtures before the international break saw Mainz lose to Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin, with Saturday’s match unlikely to provide any respite. Rose’s Dortmund side are yet to have found their defensive stability, but have maintained their ruthless streak going forward.
Erling Haaland sits top of the Bundesliga scoring charts with seven goals to his name, despite missing the last two matches through injury. The Norway forward is set to return to the starting XI on Saturday and will be keen to make up for any lost time and maintain his lead over Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.
Mainz have been strong defensively and have conceded the joint-fewest goals in the league so far this season with just five. Saturday will be the biggest test for Svensson’s back line so far and the manager will surely be concerned by his side’s lack of cutting edge if they do concede.
Under 2.5 goals scored at 2.65
Mainz will defend deep looking to nullify Dortmund’s attacking options.
Dortmund to win to nil at 2.65
Mainz are averaging just one goal per game this season to Dortmund’s two.
