Borussia Dortmund vs. FC Köln Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
22 January 2020
Friday 24 January
Signal Iduna Park – Bundesliga
Erling Braut Haaland came on to turn the game for BVB against Augsburg and he might get the nod from the start against Köln at home this Friday. The away side are only three points above the playoff to fight for survival when they travel to play one of the title contenders.
Köln will have to look back at a 2-1 win in December 2015 to find their last upturn against BVB, but to find their last win at the Signal Iduna Park, they need to dig all the way down into the archive and look at the results from April 1991.
Dortmund have only lost six home games against Köln and are currently unbeaten in six games against this Friday’s opponent. Their reverse fixture in August last year ended in a 3-1 win for the BVB, when Jadon Sancho started a comeback to turn 0-1 to a 3-1 win at the RheinEnergieStadion. Achraf Hakimi and Paco Alcacer scored two late goals when Dominick Drexler had given Köln the lead in the first half.
But the record speaks in favour of the home side, who are on a run of 19 home games without losing to this week’s rivals.
BVB will have to cope without Thomas Delaney, who suffered a knee injury ahead of their return to action. Marcel Schmelzer has a torn muscle fibre since December 4 and has missed six matches. He will most likely be out of this Friday’s game as well.
FC Köln arrive in Dortmund without any players out injured and no suspensions, meaning that Markus Gisdol could pick from his best squad and will most likely have a side eager to impress against the top guns from the Signal Iduna.
Borussia Dortmund vs. FC Köln Preview and Predictions
The name on all the lips in Germany after the return of the Bundesliga will be the Norwegian striker Lucien Favre picked up during the January market. Haaland came on and needed approximately three minutes to score his first goal for his new side. The following 17 minutes turned the game on its head, when they went from 1-3 down to win 5-3 and Haaland didn’t stop until he had scored a hat-trick in his debut. Now he’s expected to start the next game and Dortmund may be backed at 1.30 to win on Friday.
Köln are suffering at the bottom half of the table and are only three points above the bottom three and are trying to save their season. It started well with a 3-1 win against Wolfsburg after shutting down ahead of the winter break with a 1-0 win against Werder Bremen.
Köln are currently on a run of four consecutive wins and their last defeat came against Union Berlin on December 8. They’ve kept two clean sheets and are currently at 5.85 to hold Dortmund for a draw on the road. A win may be backed at 9.00 and coach Gisdol will be hoping to be able to call on the in-form Jhon Cordoba, who scored twice in the 3-1 win against Die Wolfe last weekend.
Dortmund looked like two different teams in the first and the second half, as the last 45 against Augsburg really looked promising. They will need to evict the errors from their first 45 minutes in the Bundesliga this year and avoid giving players like Cordoba the chance to upset them in front of their own.
BVB are still seven points behind RB Leipzig in the league but are not giving up on the title just yet. If they can string a great run of form. If Haaland can continue on his current form, he would still be unstoppable also after moving away from the Austrian league and might spurt BVB on.
Total goals Over 3.5 at 1.95
Borussia Dortmund scored five against Augsburg but looked rusty at the back and against a strong and confident Köln side, it may be goals galore again this week. BVB are struggling to keep a clean sheet, but will be expecting to pick up another win.
Dortmund to win and both teams to score at 2.30
BVB are currently on a run of three games without a clean sheet and Köln’s great form could be another threat. Favre has said he will be easing his new Norwegian star into the system but will definitely be looking to build on the great start of the year with another big win.
