Barcelona vs. Atletico Madrid Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid travel to Saudi Arabia for the first round of the Spanish Super Cup in its new format. Valencia and Real Madrid meet in the other semi-final.

Past Meetings

A tight encounter between the two teams was settled by a moment of Lionel Messi magic earlier this season.

Team News

Barcelona are without goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen meaning another start for Neto. Midfielder Artur, and winger Ousmane Dembele are also out through injury, having struggled to establish themselves in the starting XI this season.

Koke is a risk for Thursdays game after missing out at the weekend, whilst Diego Costa and Stefan Savic are facing long spells in the treatment room.

Barcelona vs. Atletico Madrid Predictions, Preview and Predictions

It has been a decade since Atletico Madrid beat Barcelona domestically, so Diego Simeone will hope that the Spanish Super Cup’s move to Saudi Arabia changes his fortunes. Atletico are 3.85 for the win.

A new competition format will see four teams battling it out to reach a final, making Thursday’s game a semi-final. Whether either manager considers it as such remains to be seen, and it would come as no surprise if weakened XIs are fielded, especially given that Atletico play again on Saturday evening.

The La Liga title race is on a knife-edge, with Barcelona and Real Madrid tied on 40 points, and Atletico just behind on 35, although in the best form of the lot. Whilst the Spanish Super Cup is important, and brings significant marketability, Ernersto Valverde may be tempted to rest the likes of Luis Suarez, who looked tired at times in the weekend’s dissapointing draw with Levante.

Barcelona have won just two of their last six league games, and remain a long way off where they should be, but still go into this game at 2.05, with the draw after 90 minutes at 3.45. With little transfer activity expected over the winter, and recently coming out of a winter break, the Blaugrana need to build a winning run before the season comes to its crux. Celebrating the Super Cup would certainly take some of the pressure off Valverde.

For Simeone, the Super Cup provides the perfect opportunity to get his hands on some silverware, something rarely seen at the Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico won the trophy back in 2018 and will be keen to repeat the feat this year. With their last match against Barcelona so closely fought, Los Rojiblancos have as good a chance as ever to take the win.

Recommended Bets

Under 2.5 goals at 1.9

Atletico’s front line is underperforming at the moment, but their defence remains highly competent, and games against Barcelona often end in a low-score.

Atletico to win at 3.85

Barcelona are undoubtedly favourites, but with their priorities elsewhere, the odds are good for an Atletico win.
