Atletico Madrid vs. Villarreal Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
21 February 2020
Sunday 23 February
Wanda Metropolitano – La Liga
Atletico Madrid aim to carry their impressive Champions League form into La Liga, as they face Villarreal on Sunday. The home side were buoyed by beating Liverpool, but their domestic form hasn’t been so good.
The two sides played out to a goalless draw when they met earlier this season. However, in last campaign’s edition of this feature, Atletico won by two goals to nil with Saul Niguez and Alvaro Morata both on the scoresheet.
Diego Simeone is expected to make a number of changes to the side that beat Liverpool on Tuesday, with Diego Costa likely to start up front. Yannick Carrasco may also feature, having struggled for fitness since returning on loan, whilst Joao Felix has an outside chances of making the bench for Sunday’s game.
Pau Torres recovered from injury to feature for Javier Calleja’s side last weekend, and will be hoping to start over Manuel Trigueros this weekend. Bruno Soriano and Alberto Moreno both remain sidelined however, whilst Frank Anguissa will be in contention to start.
Atletico Madrid vs. Villarreal Predictions, Preview and Predictions
Diego Simeone will be hoping that Atletico’s win over Liverpool on Tuesday will be a turning point in his side’s domestic season. Just two league wins out of their last five has seen Atleti drop down into fourth place in La Liga, only two points clear of weekend opponents Villarreal. The home side are 1.64 to win, with Villarreal at 6.05 and 3.70 for the draw.
The visitors are in strong form, and have won five out of their last seven games. Their most recent, a 2-1 victory over Levante may have been closer than Calleja would have wanted, but has proven his team’s ability to grind out wins when not playing at their best.
With just two defeats following a run of six games without a win in November, the Yellow Submarine have turned their season around, and have been snapping at Atletico’s heels for a few weeks. A win would see the three points necessary to leapfrog their hosts, and potentially Sevilla into a Champions League space.
Simeone will be keen to avoid a defeat, and the home side have been playing more like themselves in recent weeks. The win at Liverpool may have been through defensive means, but will have further lifted confidence, something that will be further boosted by returns from injury for Diego Costa and Joao Felix. If the Rojiblancos can get their front line firing at the best of their ability, they should be able to consolidate their top-four position, although catching the top-two may be impossible.
To achieve their goal, Atletico will have to start beating challengers such as Villarreal, and will hope to make the most of their opportunity on Saturday.
Diego Costa to score anytime at 1.95
The Spanish striker may have just scored twice in La Liga this season, but looked keen in his cameo on Tuesday.
Both Teams to score at 2.00
Atletico make look to be more expansive on Sunday, and could leave uncharacteristic gaps at the back.
