Saturday 14 December

Wanda Metropolitano - La Liga

Atletico Madrid are in desperate need of a win this weekend, as they welcome Osasuna to the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday night. Los Rojiblancos are on a dismal run, with only one win in eight prior to Wednesday’s Champions League game against Lokomotiv Moscow.

Past Meetings

Atletico won both meetings between these teams 3-0 during Osasuna’s most recent season in La Liga, which was the 2016-17 campaign. Los Rojillos beat Atleti 3-0 in the game before, ending the Madrid side’s eight-match unbeaten run against them, which included seven victories for Diego Simeone’s side.

Team News

Diego Costa remains on the sidelines with a neck injury that’s set to keep the Spain international out until February. Sime Vrsaljko is also out for the next couple of months with a knee injury, while Stefan Savic is also a doubt here. Jose Gimenez could make his long-awaited return though, while Borja Garces is also back in training after a cruciate injury.

With injury concerns over as many as seven players coming into what still represents a difficult game, Osasuna head coach Jagoba Arrasate could’ve done without Oier’s suspension. He definitely misses out along with Ruben Martinez and Enrique Barja, while Javi Martinez, Sergio Herrera, Aridane Umpierrez, Marc Cardona and Nacho Vidal are all doubts.

Atletico Madrid vs. Osasuna Preview and Predictions

To say that Atletico Madrid have failed to take advantage of both Real Madrid and Barcelona’s struggles this season would be a huge understatement. Simeone’s side have made a dreadful start to the campaign, winning only six of their 16 La Liga fixtures so far.

That’s in spite of the capital club winning each of their first three matches of the season, with Los Rojiblancos only managing two victories in their last 10. Incredibly, Atleti have drawn half of their games this season, with four of those finishing goalless and the other four 1-1. Despite lying seventh in the table, they have the best defensive record in the Spanish top flight.

Eight points behind Barca and Real - who both have a game in hand due to the rearranged Clasico - Atletico at least remain in touch with the top two. They simply have to win this weekend though, and this is a decent fixture for them to get back on track. Atleti have a very good record against Osasuna, although the away team can draw level on points with their hosts should they claim a victory here.

That still seems a tall order for Arrasate’s side though, with Los Rojillos having only won five times so far this term. They have also shared the spoils in half of their La Liga fixtures to date, so the draw here could be worth a look at 4.25. Atletico are still the odds-on favourites to pick up the win though. They are 1.38, with Osasuna 10.75 for the upset.

Recommended Bets

Atletico to win to nil at 1.90

Things will surely start improving soon for Atleti, and they bring both the league’s best defence and a strong record against Osasuna into this weekend’s encounter.

Atletico to win 3-0 at 9.75

Each of the last three matches between these teams have finished with a 3-0 scoreline, while Atletico struck three times the last time they won in La Liga, which was at home to Espanyol on 10 November.
