Atletico Madrid vs. Espanyol, Betting Tips and Previews
08 November 2019
Sunday 10 November
Wanda Metropolitano – La Liga
Espanyol are back in the relegation zone and this weekend they must go hunting in the capital against a title contender in danger of falling behind. Two back-to-back losses have left Espanyol fighting to get back to shore, but they are faced with a home side who is not planning to go on dropping points in the fight for the Primera crown.
Atletico Madrid have only lost six times in 24 home games against Espanyol, but they welcome the Catalans having lost 3-0 in the reverse fixture in April. We don’t have to go further back than to May 2018 to find Espanyol’s last win over Atleti in Madrid, when Stefan Savic scored an own goal and Leo Baptistao added the second. That was their first trip to the new stadium and now they are going for the third time, after losing 1-0 last season.
Stefan Savic is not expected to be back in time for this weekend’s fixtures, as he is out with a muscle injury. It’s also touch and go with Joao Felix, who has been out injured with a sprained ankle since the 1-1 draw to Valencia. Midfield duo Saul Niguez and Thomas are both on four yellow cards and will have to be careful not to pick up a suspension.
Espanyol will still be waiting for Pablo Piatti, who has been out with a muscle injury since mid-October. Javi Puado, Fernando Calero and Jonathan Calleri are also missing for the away side.
Atletico Madrid vs. Espanyol Preview and Predictions
Atletico Madrid are still only one point behind league leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid, but two 1-1 draws - against Alaves and Sevilla respectively – have halted them in a great opportunity to go top.
They won’t be expecting Barcelona and Real to slip up again and need to keep up with them this weekend. Atleti are at 1.47 to beat a desperate Espanyol side, where a draw gives 4.05 and Espanyol are at 9.25 to win the match.
The lack of a goal scorer is a concern for Diego Simeone, who will be pleased to see starlet Joao Felix closing in on a return to the squad. They have only scored twice or more in four out of their 12 last matches across all tournaments.
But Espanyol haven’t been prolific themselves lately and are suffering in the bottom three after 12 games. They might be fatigued by their appearances in Europa after last season’s exploits and two losses on the bounce have rooted them in the relegation zone. They have only scored six times in the league this year and against a cheap Atleti defence, they might not even get a look at the target on Sunday.
Atletico to win to nil at 1.95
To prolong on the horrid goal statistics of a tame Espanyol, they have left the pitch without scoring seven times across all tournaments this season and Atletico have kept a clean sheet in seven out of 12 league games, being the cheapest defence alongside Athletic Bilbao.
Exact Score 1-0 at 5.15
As well as being the cheapest defence, they are also impressively far up the table looking at how many goals they have scored so far. In the league, Atletico have scored only 12 times in 12 games and might get a narrow win also on Sunday – pick up the points and move on.
