Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

We could be in for a cracking game at the top of La Liga this weekend, as Atletico Madrid play host to Barcelona on Sunday evening. With a rejuvenated Real Madrid breathing down their necks, this is a huge game for Barca, while Atleti can draw level on points with their visitors if they triumph at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Past Meetings

Barcelona have an incredible record against Atletico in La Liga, with the Catalan club’s last domestic defeat to Los Rojiblancos coming all the way back in February 2010. Atleti may have won a couple of big Champions League matches in that time, but Barca have triumphed in 13 of the last 18 La Liga meetings between the teams.

Team News

Diego Simeone could finally welcome back key defender Jose Gimenez for this game, although the centre-back won’t be rushed back after missing the whole of the season so far. Stefan Savic suffered a relapse after returning too soon earlier this month and misses out, while Diego Costa and Sime Vrsaljko are injured. Borja Garces is nearing a return to action after a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Antoine Griezmann is set for a frosty reception on his return to the capital, after switching red and white for blue and red in the summer. The Frenchman could start alongside Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele in what ought to be a lethal attack, but in practice has been performing well below par. Sergio Busquets is a big miss for Barca through suspension, while Jordi Alba and Nelson Semedo are injured.

Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona Preview and Predictions

Barcelona are in the midst of what could be a defining run of fixtures for their season, with the La Liga champions facing a series of massive games at home and in Europe. Atletico Madrid are out to put a serious dent in their opponents’ momentum, and overtake Ernesto Valverde’s side in the Primera Division table in the process.

The capital club may have an abysmal record against Barca in recent years, but the last two matches between the teams in Madrid have both finished in 1-1 draws. Barcelona were lucky to escape with a point in last season’s corresponding fixture after a 90th-minute equaliser from Dembele, while it was Suarez who rescued the Catalans in the 82nd minute the season before.

Atleti are certainly capable of beating this underperforming Barca side, while the home side have an extra day to prepare for this game following the midweek Champions League exertions of both teams. However, Simeone’s men aren’t exactly in the best of form themselves at the moment, with just one win from their last six matches in all competitions.

Barca meanwhile are La Liga’s top scorers by some distance, hitting the back of the net 35 times in just 13 fixtures so far - seven more than Real Madrid with the next best attack. That’s one of the reasons why the away team start as the slight favourites in the betting for this game, priced at 2.60. Atletico are 2.80, while the draw’s available at 3.45.

Recommended Bets

Score draw at 4.30

Neither of these teams are in great form, but this game is likely to be a tight affair with little to separate the sides. Four of the last eight meetings between the clubs have ended in a score draw, while there hasn’t been a 0-0 between them in almost six years.

1-1 draw at 6.35

All four of those most recent draws between the sides have finished 1-1, so this bet could be the way to go if you’re looking to predict the correct scoreline in Sunday’s game.
