Sharjah Cricket Stadium – T20 World Cup
Scotland make their Super 12 T20 World Cup debut with a clash against Afghanistan in a tantalizing affair which could go either way. Both sides will know that victory is a must as both kick off their main draw exploits with the cricket betting online making the pair outsiders to progress from group B.
The pair have met six times in T20 Internationals and Afghanistan have a proud record of having won all six. They played each other at the 2016 T20 World Cup during the qualifying stage with Afghanistan taking a 14-run victory on their way to making it through to the Super 10.
Afghanistan come into the T20 World Cup with a significant ace up their sleeve. Captain Mohammed Nabi is the world number one ranked T20 International all-rounder and will no doubt carry the pressure of the team. However, Nabi was named captain after Rashid Khan stepped down after claiming he was not consulted by selectors on the squad, but he is still named in the team.
Scotland has been a story of success so far with captain Kyle Coetzer playing the heroics with the bat especially in the thumping of Oman which ensured Scotland’s first appearance in the main draw.
Afghanistan vs. Scotland Preview and Predictions
On paper, Afghanistan wins this contest nine out of ten times. So far, Afghanistan have claimed six wins over Scotland at the T20 World Cup. However, this does have the potential to be that anomaly. In the qualifying group stage, Scotland have been unbeatable, and caused the shock of the tournament so far by beating Bangladesh by 6 runs. They also overcame Papua New Guinea and Oman to head into this clash undefeated.
What has been most impressive for the Scots is their ability to score runs throughout the order. Against Bangladesh they needed to rely on the middle to tail enders of Chris Greaves and Mark Watt to see them through whilst against Oman it was the top order who came to the fore as Scotland won by 8 wickets.
Both sides have reason to be confident with Afghanistan’s stock only rising higher as the eighth ranked team in the T20I world. This will be a different test for Scotland though and we expect the spinners of Afghanistan to shine through on the slow UAE wickets. If Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Mohammed Nabi can all step up to the plate with the ball then it really should be an opening victory for Afghanistan. Watch out for power hitter Rahmanullah Gurbaz too as he chases down the sixes. Don’t rule Scotland out of this one as they have shown they can get the job done but the balance of play firmly sits in favour of an Afghanistan win.
Afghanistan to win
Afghanistan’s spinners look likely to be the deciding factor in this one but Scotland will give them a good run for their money.
No run from 1st delivery in both innings
Both sides will know they will have to win this one if they are to have any chance of progressing to the semifinal, so expect a tentative start to both innings.
